When a homeowner needs a plumber in a hurry, they look at two things: who is close by, and who has good reviews. A steady stream of honest Google reviews can be worth more than any advert.

Ask at the right moment

The best time to ask is right after you finish a job, while the customer is happy and the problem is fresh in their mind. Be direct and friendly: “If you are happy with the work, a quick Google review would really help my business.”

Make it easy

  • In your Google Business Profile, copy your review link.
  • Send it by WhatsApp straight after the job, with a short thank-you message.
  • Print a card with a QR code that links to your review page and leave it with the customer.

What to say

“Hi Thandi, thanks for having us out today. If you were happy with the work, would you mind leaving a short review here? It makes a big difference to a small business like ours. [link]”

Reply to every review

Replying shows future customers that you care. Keep replies short and personal:

  • Happy customer: thank them by name and mention the job (“Thanks, Pieter. Glad the new DB board is working perfectly”).
  • Unhappy customer: stay calm and professional. Apologise for their experience, offer to make it right and invite them to contact you directly. Do not argue in public. Future customers will judge you by how you respond.

Use AI to draft replies

Tools such as ChatGPT and Claude can help you write polite replies quickly. Paste in the review and ask: “Write a short, friendly reply from a plumbing business owner. Thank the customer and mention that we are available for follow-up work.” Always read and edit it so it sounds like you.

What not to do

  • Never buy reviews or write fake ones. It breaks Google’s rules, and it can get your profile suspended.
  • Do not offer discounts or gifts in exchange for positive reviews.
  • Do not ask only your happiest customers. A mix of honest reviews looks more trustworthy.

Keep it up

Aim to ask every customer, every time. Even one or two new reviews a week adds up quickly. Pair your Google reviews with a complete profile (see our guide to getting on Google Maps) and a NoahGuy listing, and customers will find you wherever they look.
